THF and MI Green Thumb CSA are looking for a farm intern for the 2013 season. Its not nessary to have farming experience, we can teach you, but you must be honest, willing to work long days, 5-6 days a week in all weather conditions and have your own transportation to and from the farm. There is no smoking on the farm due to tobacco mosaic virus, and no outside animals allowed to insure the health of our livestock. A background check may be performed.

Interns will get a weekly share in farm produce and a monetary stipend can be negoticated for later in the season. We do not have intern housing at this time.

We have a lot planed for this year that may offer some great learning experiences. We will be looking to build a new garden for the CSA, build one or two new high tunnels, plant and build new pasture and build a farm stand. We will be adding more heritage pigs to our livestock program this year and will need to build more pig tractors. We will still be going to the farmers market with produce and fruit, making apple cider in the fall and will continue to sell to local restaurants.

We love what we do and have a passion for learning and teaching others about local food and agriculture. If you also have a passion for local food, farming and really really hard work, please email us your resume or a letter explaining who you are and why you think your would like to work with us to All resumes should be in no later then April 16th.

I was reading this months issue of Acres and they have a really article about women in farming that I just had to share.

According to World Watch Institute's "Investing in Women Farmers," women farmers produce more then half of all food worldwide and account for 43 percent of the ag labor force globally. The USDA says that more then 1 million farms were owned or operated by women. In a smaller number,  that's equal to about 1 out of 7 farms having a women at the helm. The thing I found most interesting, is women farmers are more likely to own all of the land they farm, have smaller more specialized farms, and be organic or follow organic practices.

Lets hear it for the ladies!

A lot has been going on around here on top of getting ready for the upcoming growing season. We are still packing things to move from our old farm to the new one in Emmett. Moving the animals is going to be the most time consuming part. While the new farm has been well taken care of and maintained, there are no longer any paddocks, fences or stalls left anywhere. So everything that we need for the animals must be built and soon.

On top of that, we are still in the process of trimming the apple and pear trees. We are lucky enough to have friends and family that come out and help us when they can. With any luck, we will get at least the front half done before the trees bud.

We are also still in the process of cooking down the maple sap to make maple syrup. It looks like Maple Season might go a little longer this year too. So we're going to run with it, no pun intended, and see what we end up with. It just means we might have more products to offer our members and customers this season.

When i carve out a little time, I will work on Toad Hall's class schedule for 2013. I know we are hoping to offer the canning class again this year and maybe a cheese making class. My husband says he will do a basic blacksmithing class this year too. If there is anything you guys are itching to learn about, send me an email and let me know. Even if its not something I know how to do, chances are I might know someone who does and if there is enough interest, we can build a class for it.

Keep checking back here and on our Facebook page for more updates.
